FAQ.

What is soapstone?
Expand panel

Soapstone is a rare natural phenomenon, caused by millions of years of metamorphosis through pressure and heat, in the rocks of the Finnish mountains. Soapstone is soft but extremely dense and high in the mineral magnesite – leading to its incredible heat retention properties.

How 'green' is a Tulikivi?
Expand panel

Heating with wood is carbon neutral: the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide would be released if the wood decayed, but burning it allows the heat energy to be used efficiently. Switching to bioenergy, of which burning wood is an example, is an excellent way in which to contribute to achieving the Kyoto targets for the reduction of greenhouse gases. Tulikivi is the first company in its sector to calculate the carbon footprint of its fireplaces: the impact of the Tulikivi fireplace manufacturing process is offset in as little as 1-2 years.

What about emissions?
Expand panel

Tulikivi fireplaces burn with high efficiency. Only a small quantity of wood is required, which burns cleanly and produces very little ash. Our fireplaces exceed even the toughest of emissions standards and the heat they generate can even be connected to a Thermal Store and hot water system.

Heavy investment in technology ensures Tulikivi fireplaces are efficient, economical, environmentally friendly, easy to use and of the highest standards.

How much wood do I need?
Expand panel

A Tulikivi stove only needs approximately 1% of its weight in fuel to be fully loaded. In other words, a 1 tonne stove will require 8-10 kg (maximum). If you burn more wood, this will not make the room any warmer, as stone, like a full sponge, is unable to accumulate any more heat. Moreover, you could risk damaging your stove.

Overloading your stove is pointless, as if the fire is too intense, the smoke disappears too quickly and the stone does not have sufficient time to absorb the heat. This means that if you have to burn 12 kg of wood in total, you will obtain far better heating results by burning three 4 kg loads rather than two 6 kg loads. The quantity of wood required for each season depends on a wide range of factors, including the energy consumption of the house and, of course, the size of the stove. Follow the instructions provided with your Tulikivi stove.

Can a Tulikivi burn anything else?
Expand panel

A Tulikivi can only burn wood but this can be in the form of logs, briquettes or pellets.

How can I know if a Tulikivi is right for my home?
Expand panel

Tulikivi fireplaces are available in a wide range of styles and sizes and have been installed in all types of homes – one was even installed on a boat. We offer a free home survey where we will come and assess your needs and talk through the options available. Please see our contact page to make an appointment.

I don't have a chimney - can I still have one?
Expand panel

You do not need to have a chimney to have a Tulikivi. A Tulikivi needs a flue system, but this can be installed anywhere in a room as long as it is possible to route it outside. You can even have a soapstone chimney built in – allowing heat to radiate to upper floors.

Isn't burning wood messy?
Expand panel

Tulikivi fireplaces burn extremely cleanly creating very little ash. What ash is produced, drops through the grate into an ashbox which has a lid– allowing you to dispose of it without causing lots of mess. And, of course, as there is so little ash produced, it will need emptying much less often. Wood ash can also be used as a fertiliser in the garden!

I'm great at DIY - can I install it myself?
Expand panel

Tulikivi fireplaces need to be built in situ and our installers are highly trained. We would not recommend a Tulikivi as a DIY project.

Where can I see one working?
Expand panel

We have a main showroom in South Cerney, in the Cotswolds, with many working models. We also have regional dealers, some of home have ‘home’ showrooms. Please contact us for further information.
